Local notes · Bardez taluka
A family sofa in Guirim is bought to be sat on every day for many years, so start with what is inside it: a seasoned hardwood frame and dense foam matter more than the cover, which can be renewed. For the cover, the inland setting is forgiving. There is no salt, so cotton and linen blends are open to you as well as synthetics. Think about heat, though. In a room cooled only by a fan, leatherette grows sticky by afternoon and a breathable woven fabric is kinder. If the windows give onto the highway, a close weave stops road grit working into the cloth. When the old sofa is still solid, reupholstering it is often the thriftier path.
Guirim is a village on the highway between Porvorim and Mapusa. It has a large church and school on the hill, fields on the low ground, and a growing number of housing colonies and apartment buildings for people who work in Mapusa, Porvorim and Panjim.
Housing here is mainly family homes and mid-priced flats in newer buildings. People buy for everyday living, and look for durable, good-value furnishing.
Guirim is inland. Homes near the highway get traffic noise and dust; those on the low ground near the fields are humid in the monsoon.
Inland homes are drier, so a wider range of fabrics works, including cotton and linen blends. Heat is the concern: leatherette becomes sticky in a room without air conditioning, and a breathable woven fabric is more comfortable.
Measure the lift, the stairwell and the door before choosing a sofa for a flat. A sofa made in sections, or with removable legs and arms, goes up where a one-piece sofa will not. An L-shape should be ordered for the correct hand.
Guirim is about fifty-five minutes from the showroom, on the highway before Mapusa. We measure free of charge.
A sheer on the window side to catch dust, and a heavier lined curtain behind it, which softens noise a little. Roller blinds are the easiest to wipe clean.
