The Short Answer
For seats you use every day, choose 40-density HR foam. It costs about ₹2,200 per seat and lasts 8 to 12 years. For a guest room or a lightly used sofa, 32-density foam at about ₹1,200 per seat is enough and lasts 4 to 5 years.
Back cushions carry far less weight than seats, so they use softer foam or fibre filling.
What Foam Density Means
Density is the weight of the foam: 32-density foam weighs 32 kg per cubic metre, 40-density weighs 40 kg. Heavier foam has more material in it, so it holds its shape longer.
Density is not the same as firmness. A dense foam can be made soft or firm. Density tells you how long the cushion will last; firmness tells you how it feels on the first day.
| Foam | How it feels | How long it lasts | Approx. price per seat | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low-density foam, below 28 | Soft at first | Often sags within 18 months | Found in budget sofas | Not recommended for seats |
| 32-density foam | Medium-firm | 4 to 5 years | ₹1,200 | Guest rooms, light daily use |
| 40-density HR foam | Springy, supportive | 8 to 12 years | ₹2,200 | Main living room seats, daily use |
| Quick-dry reticulated foam | Firm, open-cell | Made for outdoor use | Quoted by size | Balcony, garden and poolside cushions |
HR stands for high resilience. HR foam springs back the moment you stand up and does not develop the hollows that ordinary foam does.
What Is Inside a Good Seat Cushion
A seat cushion is not a single block of foam. It is built in layers, and each one has a job.
- ●Core: 32 or 40-density foam, usually 10 to 15 cm thick. This is what you are paying for.
- ●Topper: 4 to 5 cm of softer foam on top, for the sink-in feel without losing support.
- ●Wrap: polyfill batting around the foam. It rounds the edges and fills the cover so the fabric sits smooth.
- ●Cover: the upholstery fabric, ideally with a zip so the foam can be changed later.
A cushion that is only a core feels hard and looks boxy. A cushion that is only soft foam feels good in the showroom and flattens within a year or two.
Signs Your Sofa Foam Needs Replacing
- 1A hollow stays in the seat after you get up.
- 2You can feel the wooden frame or the springs through the cushion.
- 3The seat is lower at the front edge than at the back.
- 4The cover is loose and wrinkled, because the foam inside has shrunk.
- 5The cushion does not spring back within a second or two when you press and release it.
If the frame is solid and the fabric is still good, new foam alone brings the sofa back. This is the cheapest repair there is for a tired sofa.
What Replacement Foam Costs
| Sofa | Seats | 32-density foam | 40-density HR foam |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single chair or recliner | 1 | ₹1,200 | ₹2,200 |
| 2-seater | 2 | ₹2,400 | ₹4,400 |
| 3-seater | 3 | ₹3,600 | ₹6,600 |
| L-shape, 5 seats | 5 | ₹6,000 | ₹11,000 |

New Foam Only, or Full Reupholstery?
| Your sofa | What to do |
|---|---|
| Fabric good, seats sunk | Replace the seat foam only |
| Fabric worn or stained, seats still springy | Reupholster and keep the foam |
| Fabric worn and seats sunk | Reupholster with new foam |
| Frame wobbles, joints cracked, or made of particle board | Do not spend on it. Put the money towards a new sofa |
A solid hardwood frame is worth restoring more than once. Tap the frame under the arm: a dull, solid sound means hardwood, a hollow rattle means board.
How to Measure a Cushion for New Foam
Measure the cover, not the old foam, which has shrunk.
- 1Take the cover off, or open the zip, and lay it flat.
- 2Measure seam to seam: length, width and the height of the side band.
- 3Note the shape. Many seat cushions are T-shaped or cut around an arm.
- 4Photograph the cushion on the sofa and off it.
New foam is cut slightly larger than the cover so the fabric pulls taut. Send the measurements and photos on WhatsApp for a quote. In Goa, we collect the sofa or its cushions, refill them in our Margao workshop and bring them back.
Making Cushion Foam Last
- ●Turn and swap the seat cushions every month so no one seat takes all the wear.
- ●Do not sit on the front edge or the arms. Foam breaks down fastest where weight is concentrated.
- ●Keep cushions dry. Foam that stays damp grows mould and smells; dry a wet cushion on its edge in moving air.
- ●For outdoor seating, use quick-dry foam with a breathable base, not indoor foam.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which foam is best for sofa seat cushions?
40-density high-resilience (HR) foam is the best choice for seats used every day. It springs back quickly and lasts about 8 to 12 years. 32-density foam is a sound budget choice for lighter use and lasts about 4 to 5 years.
What is the price of sofa cushion foam?
Replacing seat foam costs approximately ₹1,200 per seat in 32-density foam and ₹2,200 per seat in 40-density HR foam. A 3-seater is about ₹3,600 or ₹6,600. Prices vary with cushion size and market rates.
Can I replace only the foam and keep my sofa fabric?
Yes, if the fabric is in good condition and the covers have zips or can be opened at a seam. New foam is cut to the size of the cover and wrapped before it goes in. If the fabric is worn too, it is more economical to reupholster the sofa at the same time.
How do I know my sofa foam needs replacing?
Press the seat down with your hand and let go. Good foam returns to shape within a second or two. If a hollow stays, if you can feel the frame or springs when you sit, or if the cover has gone loose and wrinkled, the foam has lost its resilience.
