Local notes · Bardez taluka
People in Mapusa furnish for use, and a sofa here has to earn its place. In a flat, measure the lift, the stair turn and the front door before settling on a size, because in the older blocks the stair may be the only way up; a sofa built in sections goes where a single piece will not. The air is free of salt, so cotton and linen blends are safe, and a breathable weave is kinder than leatherette in a room without air conditioning. Families in the old houses on the hill who still own carved rosewood or teak sofas should keep them: new webbing, foam and fabric bring such a frame back.
Mapusa is the market town of Bardez and the commercial centre of North Goa. Its municipal market, busiest on Fridays, draws people from all the surrounding villages. The town spreads over low hills, with the older houses around the church and Altinho, and apartment buildings along the roads to Duler, Karaswada and Ansabhat.
Mapusa has many apartment buildings of every age, housing colonies, and old family houses on the hill. People furnish practically here, and it is where residents of Assagao, Parra, Moira and Siolim come for everyday needs.
Mapusa is several kilometres inland, so salt is not a concern. Heat, humidity and dust from the busy roads around the market are. Flats in older buildings often have damp patches on outer walls.
Measure the lift, the stairwell and the door before choosing a sofa for a flat. A sofa made in sections, or with removable legs and arms, goes up where a one-piece sofa will not. An L-shape should be ordered for the correct hand.
Inland homes are drier, so a wider range of fabrics works, including cotton and linen blends. Heat is the concern: leatherette becomes sticky in a room without air conditioning, and a breathable woven fabric is more comfortable.
Mapusa is about an hour from our Margao showroom, beyond Panjim and Porvorim. We measure free of charge and plan North Goa visits by area, so Mapusa is combined with Guirim, Parra and Moira.

Not while it is damp. We check the wall first. PVC wall panels on a frame cover a damp wall better than wallpaper.
