Most people furnishing in Guirim are doing up a flat or family house to live in for years, and the sensible curtain is one that washes well and still looks decent after many washes. Polyester-cotton blends and printed cottons do that; silk does not belong in a house with schoolchildren and a highway nearby. Being inland, the trouble is heat and grit, not salt. West windows want a blackout lining to keep the afternoon out. Flats towards the highway gain from two layers, the sheer taking the dust and the heavier one behind dulling the lorries a little. Down by the fields, skip thick interlining, which holds the monsoon damp.
Guirim is a village on the highway between Porvorim and Mapusa. It has a large church and school on the hill, fields on the low ground, and a growing number of housing colonies and apartment buildings for people who work in Mapusa, Porvorim and Panjim.
Housing here is mainly family homes and mid-priced flats in newer buildings. People buy for everyday living, and look for durable, good-value furnishing.
Guirim is inland. Homes near the highway get traffic noise and dust; those on the low ground near the fields are humid in the monsoon.
Away from the coast the problem is heat and dust, not salt. A blackout or thermal lining on west-facing windows keeps afternoon heat out, and a sheer behind it holds back road dust when windows are open. Darker, tighter weaves hide dust better than pale open ones.
Flats usually have standard-height windows and a neighbour close by. A sheer for the day and a blackout for the night, on a double track, gives privacy without darkness. Where a split air conditioner sits above the window, a ceiling track lets the curtain hang clear of it.
