Artificial grass is a carpet of green plastic blades stitched into a backing sheet. Holes in the backing let rain drain through. It is cut to the shape of the space, laid on a firm level surface and fixed at the edges and joins.
In Goa it is used most on balconies and terraces, where it softens a tiled floor, and on small lawns that turn to mud in the monsoon and dry out in summer.

Laying It Properly
On a balcony, the floor must slope to its drain as before, and the drain is left clear so rain runs off under the grass. On open ground, the soil is levelled and compacted and a weed barrier goes down first. Joins between rolls are taped from below so they do not show, and the pile is laid facing the same way across the whole area.
