Two kinds of window decide curtain work in Panjim. In Fontainhas and São Tomé the houses open straight onto narrow streets, so a passer-by is an arm's length from the room; a sheer that stays drawn all day gives privacy and still lets the light in, and the heavier curtain behind it is only pulled at night. Hang both above the frame so old shutters and wooden balconies stay usable. In the flats towards St Inez, Tonca and Taleigao a double track does the same job. The Mandovi keeps the air humid, so pick fabrics that dry quickly, with a lining that comes off for washing.
Panjim, or Panaji, is the capital of Goa, built along the south bank of the Mandovi. The old quarters of Fontainhas and São Tomé keep their narrow streets of painted Portuguese-era houses, the centre has government offices and shops around the church square, and newer apartment blocks spread towards St Inez, Tonca and Taleigao.
Panjim homes range from restored houses in Fontainhas, with wooden balconies and windows opening straight onto the street, to flats in buildings from the 1970s onwards. Street-level windows need privacy without losing light, which makes sheers and zebra blinds popular. Offices and clinics are a large part of the work here.
The river and the nearby sea keep the city humid. Low-lying streets near the creek at St Inez flood in heavy rain, and ground-floor walls there hold damp. Traffic dust settles on fabrics in rooms facing the main roads.
Flats usually have standard-height windows and a neighbour close by. A sheer for the day and a blackout for the night, on a double track, gives privacy without darkness. Where a split air conditioner sits above the window, a ceiling track lets the curtain hang clear of it.
Old houses have tall windows, often with wooden shutters and a deep sill. Curtains are hung from above the frame, not inside it, so the shutters still open. Ceilings are high, so allow for long drops, and choose a rod and finials that suit the woodwork.
