Local notes · Tiswadi taluka
If your Ribandar house came with its old carved settee, start there. A hardwood frame of that age deserves new webbing, foam and fabric long before anyone thinks of replacing it, and reupholstery is often the right job in these houses. The river air decides the rest. Choose a cover that dries quickly and zips off for washing, and stand the piece on its legs a little clear of the back wall, which is the damp one. Anyone ordering a new sofa for a narrow two-storey house should check the staircase and the turn at the top first; a sofa built in sections goes up where a single piece will not.
Ribandar is the long, narrow village on the Mandovi between Panjim and Old Goa, reached by the causeway from the city. A single road runs through it, lined with old houses that back onto the river, with a ferry across to Chorão.
Ribandar is known for its row of Portuguese-era houses, many two storeys high with balconies over the road and the water behind. Several have been restored. Newer flats stand on the hill above.
With the river on one side and salt pans and mangroves along the causeway, Ribandar is humid and breezy, and mosquitoes are common in the evening.
In a damp room, foam and fabric can turn musty. Raise the sofa on legs so air passes underneath, choose removable covers that can be washed, and keep it a little away from outside walls.
Many old houses still have their carved rosewood or teak sofas. These frames are worth restoring more than once: new webbing, foam and fabric bring them back for far less than a new sofa of the same quality.
Ribandar is about fifty minutes from the showroom, just beyond Panjim. We measure free of charge.
Sheer curtains or zebra blinds on the road side. They let light in and stop passers-by seeing into the room.
