Local notes · Tiswadi taluka
Big rooms with high ceilings make an ordinary three-seater look lost, and that is the usual mistake in an Altinho bungalow. Sofas for these rooms are better made to order: longer, with a back in proportion to the ceiling. Where a house still has its old carved rosewood or teak seating, restoring the frame with new webbing, foam and cloth is the wiser course. Fabric needs thought on this hill. Rooms shaded by trees hold damp, so raise the sofa on legs and keep it off the outer wall; on the breezy side, strong light through tall windows fades cloth, and a fade-resistant weave earns its keep. Official residences suit a sober plain weave that can be matched later.
Altinho is the wooded hill that rises behind the centre of Panjim. It holds the Bishop's Palace, official residences, government quarters and old bungalows, with views over the city and the Mandovi. It is quiet, green and close to everything.
Altinho has large old bungalows with verandas, high ceilings and many tall windows, alongside government quarters and a few newer apartment buildings. The bungalows need long curtains and a lot of fabric; many are official residences furnished to a set standard.
The hill catches the breeze and is cooler than the city below, but exposed windows take wind and driving rain in the monsoon. Trees keep rooms shaded and can make them damp.
Homes on high ground are airy, and fabrics dry well, but strong sun through large windows fades upholstery. Choose solution-dyed or fade-resistant fabric for a sofa that sits in a sunny window.
Many old houses still have their carved rosewood or teak sofas. These frames are worth restoring more than once: new webbing, foam and fabric bring them back for far less than a new sofa of the same quality.
