Fabric that can be wiped is the first requirement for a blind in Old Goa, where river humidity raises mildew spots on anything absorbent. Coated polyester rollers, in sunscreen or blackout, handle it well, and so do zebra blinds. Wooden venetians and natural bamboo are better kept to upper-floor rooms that air well, away from the low, wet ground. The older houses around the monuments bring a second complication: frames out of square and shutters opening inwards, so a blind is usually mounted over the opening, not inside it, and a roman blind looks more at home there than a plain roller. Salt is not a concern here, so standard metal fittings are acceptable.
- Colony houses and flats: coated roller blinds in the bedrooms, wiped with a damp cloth when the monsoon leaves marks.
- Old houses with inward-opening shutters: roman blinds fixed above the frame, each made to its window's own slightly different size.
- Balconies of new highway apartments: clear PVC monsoon blinds; the balcony stays dry and the room behind keeps its daylight.
Old Goa was the capital of Portuguese India, and its great churches, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Se Cathedral, are a World Heritage Site. Today it is a small town on the Mandovi, east of Panjim, with residential colonies and villages spreading around the monuments.
People live in housing colonies, new apartment buildings along the highway and older houses in the surrounding wards. The area is quiet and has drawn families who work in Panjim but want more space.
Old Goa lies beside the river and is humid, with low ground that stays wet in the monsoon. It is inland enough that salt is not a concern.
Old Goan houses
Old window frames are rarely square, and their shutters open inward. Each blind is measured at three points and usually fixed to the face of the frame or the wall above. Roman and wooden blinds suit the woodwork better than plain rollers.
Riverside and backwater homes
Constant humidity near water encourages mildew on fabric blinds. Roller blinds in PVC-coated or polyester sunscreen fabric resist it, and can be wiped with a damp cloth. Real wood and untreated bamboo are better kept for drier rooms.
