Mosquitoes are the plainest fact of life on the low ground around Old Goa. The Mandovi and the pools the monsoon leaves behind both breed them, and dusk is when they come indoors. Partial screening does little: if the bedroom windows are netted but the bathroom ventilator is open, the house fills anyway, so plan for every opening used in the evening. Flats and colony houses with aluminium sliding windows take a sliding net alongside the glass. The older houses have shutters, grilles and frames that have settled out of true; there a pleated or openable panel is made to each opening and placed where the shutters can still be worked. Fibreglass mesh is sufficient here.
- Colony houses near wet ground: nets on every window, ventilator and the back door, not just on the bedrooms.
- Old houses with shuttered windows: made-to-size pleated nets fixed inside the grille, so the shutters still close in a storm.
- New flats along the highway: sliding nets for bedroom windows and for the door to the balcony, running next to the existing glass panels.
Old Goa was the capital of Portuguese India, and its great churches, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Se Cathedral, are a World Heritage Site. Today it is a small town on the Mandovi, east of Panjim, with residential colonies and villages spreading around the monuments.
People live in housing colonies, new apartment buildings along the highway and older houses in the surrounding wards. The area is quiet and has drawn families who work in Panjim but want more space.
Old Goa lies beside the river and is humid, with low ground that stays wet in the monsoon. It is inland enough that salt is not a concern.
Old Goan houses
Old windows have shutters and grilles, and nothing is square. Each net is made to the measured opening and fixed on the side that leaves the shutters free, usually as an openable or pleated panel.
Riverside and backwater homes
Near water and paddy fields mosquitoes are worst at dusk. Fit nets on every opening that is used in the evening, including bathroom ventilators, because one unscreened window undoes the rest.
