Local notes · Salcete taluka
Starting from an empty villa, as buyers in Fatrade do, means the sofa can be drawn on the floor plan before a single piece is made. Do that: a large living room wants a sectional or two facing sofas placed with the doors and the view in mind. Then choose materials for a house that is shut for weeks and near the sea. Hardwood frame, webbing in place of bare steel springs, and a tight synthetic or performance fabric that will not hold damp. Where the room opens straight to the outdoors, performance cloth forgives damp clothes and sandy feet. For apartments run as holiday lets, add removable covers and firm foam, and consider a sofa bed.
Fatrade is a ward of Varca with its own stretch of beach, between Varca and Carmona. It is a quiet area of resorts set in large grounds, new villa developments and holiday apartments, with paddy fields between the road and the sea.
Building here is recent: gated villa clusters and apartment complexes, many sold to buyers from outside Goa as holiday homes. They are handed over unfurnished and need everything from curtain tracks to mosquito nets.
The land is flat and open to the sea breeze. Salt reaches the villas nearest the beach, and the fields hold water through the monsoon, which brings mosquitoes.
Sea air is hard on sofas: metal legs and springs rust, and natural fabrics hold damp. Choose a seasoned hardwood frame, rust-proofed or webbing suspension, and a tightly woven synthetic or outdoor-grade fabric. Leather needs conditioning to stop it cracking in salt air.
A large living room can take a sectional or a pair of sofas facing each other. Agree the layout on a floor plan first, and consider performance fabric if the room opens straight onto a pool or garden.
