An old Carmona house usually comes with its seating already. The carved rosewood or teak sofa in the front room has a frame that can be stripped and rebuilt, with fresh webbing, padding and cloth, several times over. What changes is the cover. Sea air reaches the village and the house may be shut for long spells, so natural cloth that holds damp is a poor choice; a dense synthetic weave, or cloth of outdoor grade, comes through a closed monsoon without smelling. When a new sofa is wanted for a modernised room, ask for seasoned hardwood and webbing suspension, since steel springs and metal legs rust. Leather needs conditioning here or it cracks.
Carmona is a small village between Varca and Cavelossim, set a little back from the beach. It is quieter than its neighbours, with old family houses along shaded lanes, a village church, and a few holiday complexes and villas near the shore.
Many Carmona homes belong to families who work abroad or at sea and return for part of the year. The houses are traditional, with verandas and wooden windows, and are often being modernised room by room.
Carmona is close enough to the sea for salt to matter, and the low ground between village and beach is wet in the monsoon. Houses that stand closed for months need airing and fabrics that resist mildew.
Sea air is hard on sofas: metal legs and springs rust, and natural fabrics hold damp. Choose a seasoned hardwood frame, rust-proofed or webbing suspension, and a tightly woven synthetic or outdoor-grade fabric. Leather needs conditioning to stop it cracking in salt air.
Many old houses still have their carved rosewood or teak sofas. These frames are worth restoring more than once: new webbing, foam and fabric bring them back for far less than a new sofa of the same quality.
