Fresh plaster in a recently built villa or apartment is still giving up moisture, and paper hung on it too soon lifts; check that the wall is fully dry and primed against fungus first. After that the question is which wall. Those facing the sea breeze in the villas closest to the beach take in salt and should stay painted. Inner walls are safe, and in a house that is closed between holidays, vinyl is the only sensible paper. Large villa rooms carry big patterns well. For a holiday let, keep to a design that will not date.
- Villa living rooms: a large-pattern vinyl or mural on an inner wall, once the new plaster has dried out fully.
- Bedrooms in holiday lets: hard-wearing vinyl behind the bed only, where suitcases and furniture will not rub against it.
- Seaward walls of beach-side villas: paint or PVC wall panels in place of paper, because salt and moisture come through.
Fatrade is a ward of Varca with its own stretch of beach, between Varca and Carmona. It is a quiet area of resorts set in large grounds, new villa developments and holiday apartments, with paddy fields between the road and the sea.
Building here is recent: gated villa clusters and apartment complexes, many sold to buyers from outside Goa as holiday homes. They are handed over unfurnished and need everything from curtain tracks to mosquito nets.
The land is flat and open to the sea breeze. Salt reaches the villas nearest the beach, and the fields hold water through the monsoon, which brings mosquitoes.
Sea-facing homes
Sea-facing walls take in salt and moisture, and paper lifts at the seams if the wall is not sealed. Use vinyl-coated wallpaper on an anti-fungal primer, and keep it to inner walls or walls that do not face the weather. Check for salt bloom on the plaster first.
Villas and gated homes
Large walls suit large patterns and murals, which would be lost in a small room. Double-height walls need the pattern planned from the top so the repeat lands well at eye level. Air-conditioned rooms hold wallpaper very well.
