Rugs in Candolim have two masters: the owner or long-stay guest who wants something soft underfoot through the winter, and the letting calendar, which wants something that survives sand and spills. A good-quality synthetic rug in polypropylene or nylon satisfies both. It feels comfortable, hides marks if dark or patterned, and dries quickly, which matters equally by the breezy beach and in the humid lanes inland where wool and jute would smell. Villa rooms are large, so measure for a rug that reaches under the front legs of the seating. Fitted carpet is practical only in air-conditioned bedrooms. Air the rugs outdoors whenever a property has stood shut.
- Villa living rooms: a large patterned nylon rug measured to the seating group, since rooms here are rarely a standard size.
- Air-conditioned bedrooms in serviced apartments: fitted carpet or a soft bedside rug, both workable where the air is kept dry.
- Holiday flats near the beach: dark machine-made rugs that hide sand, laundered when the winter ends and no great loss if one has to go.
Candolim is the beach town south of Calangute, running down to Fort Aguada and Sinquerim. Its long main road is lined with restaurants and shops, with hotels and resorts towards the beach and villas and holiday apartments in the quieter lanes inland.
Candolim is a little more upmarket than Calangute: more villas, serviced apartments and long-stay visitors, many of them retired people from abroad who return each winter. Property is furnished for comfort as well as letting.
The beach side is salty and breezy. Inland lanes are sheltered and green but humid. Anything outdoors needs to resist sun and salt.
Sea-facing homes
Wool and jute hold moisture near the sea and can smell. Synthetic rugs in polypropylene or nylon dry quickly and resist mildew, and can be taken outside to air. Wall-to-wall carpet suits only air-conditioned rooms.
Holiday lets and guest houses
Choose dark, patterned, machine-made rugs for a let property. They hide sand and stains, cost little to replace, and can be washed between seasons.
