Local notes · Bardez taluka
A sofa in Candolim is likely to be sat on for hours a day by someone spending the whole winter there, so comfort counts for more than it does in a short-stay room: proper seat depth, firm foam that keeps its shape, and a height that is easy to rise from, which older long-stay guests will thank you for. Made-to-order sizes allow that. Then come the local conditions. Salt on the beach side rusts springs and metal legs, and the humid lanes turn foam musty, so choose a seasoned hardwood frame, webbing suspension, legs that lift it off the floor and zip-off covers that can be laundered. Villas opening onto a pool do best with performance or outdoor-grade fabric.
Candolim is the beach town south of Calangute, running down to Fort Aguada and Sinquerim. Its long main road is lined with restaurants and shops, with hotels and resorts towards the beach and villas and holiday apartments in the quieter lanes inland.
Candolim is a little more upmarket than Calangute: more villas, serviced apartments and long-stay visitors, many of them retired people from abroad who return each winter. Property is furnished for comfort as well as letting.
The beach side is salty and breezy. Inland lanes are sheltered and green but humid. Anything outdoors needs to resist sun and salt.
Sea air is hard on sofas: metal legs and springs rust, and natural fabrics hold damp. Choose a seasoned hardwood frame, rust-proofed or webbing suspension, and a tightly woven synthetic or outdoor-grade fabric. Leather needs conditioning to stop it cracking in salt air.
Sofas in a let property should have removable, washable covers or a wipe-clean fabric, firm foam that will not sag, and a spare set of covers. A sofa bed adds a sleeping place without another room.
