Floor area is the easy part. What you pay for depends on the format: broadloom is charged by roll length, tiles by the box, rugs by standard size. Each has its own rule.
Length × width at the widest points. Split an L-shaped room into two rectangles and add them.
Strips run the long way. Strips = room's short side ÷ roll width, rounded up. Roll length = strips × long side.
Divide area by one tile's area, add waste, round up. Then divide by tiles-per-box (usually 20).
Subtract a 45 cm border from each side of the room, then round down to the nearest standard rug size.

A 12 × 12 ft room is 144 sq ft (13.4 m²). On a 12 ft (3.66 m) roll it fits in one strip with no seam, so you need about 12 linear feet of roll plus 10% — roughly 13.5 ft. Wall-to-wall carpet is sold by the linear metre off a fixed-width roll, usually 3.66 m (12 ft). A room 3 m wide still pays for the full 3.66 m width — the 0.66 m off-cut is unavoidable. A room 4 m wide needs a second strip and a seam. The tool lays strips along the room's longer side to keep seams to a minimum.
Divide square feet by 10.764. So 200 sq ft ≈ 18.6 m². Indian carpet pricing is usually quoted per square foot for wall-to-wall and per tile or per box for carpet tiles; imported broadloom is often priced per m². Toggle the price unit in the tool to match your quote.
50 × 50 cm tiles are most commonly packed 20 to a box, covering 5 m² (about 54 sq ft). Plank tiles (25 × 100 cm) are also typically 20 per box. Always order at least one spare box for future replacements from the same dye lot.
Leave roughly 45 cm (18 in) of visible floor around the rug so it sits inside the room rather than filling it. In a living room, the front legs of all seating should rest on the rug.
