In Bogmalo the beach is a few steps away and the wind comes directly off the bay, so the test of a blind is how long its metal lasts. Specify aluminium for the head rail and bottom bar, plastic or stainless for chains and brackets, and PVC, faux-wood or coated polyester in place of real timber. For guest houses and holiday flats, a chain-operated roller is the sturdy choice, with blackout fabric in the bedrooms. Homes that are locked up for part of the year gain from blinds that can stay lowered, shading the furniture until the next arrival. The villas on the slope have wide glazing, where several motorised blinds on one remote are easier to manage.
- Guest house bedrooms: blackout rollers with plastic chains and metal brackets, wiped down to clear salt before each let.
- Villas on the slope behind the beach: two or three motorised sunscreen rollers across wide sea-facing glass, joins aligned to the frames.
- Balconies above the bay: guided monsoon blinds in clear PVC, rolled up in strong wind and through the dry months.
Bogmalo is a small bay with a sandy beach on the seaward side of the Mormugao peninsula, a few kilometres from Dabolim. It has a beach resort, a handful of hotels and guest houses, a fishing community, and apartments and villas on the slope behind the beach.
Homes and hotel rooms here face the sea or sit just behind it. Many are second homes and holiday lets that stand closed for part of the year, so furnishings must cope with being shut up in humid weather and opened again for guests.
Bogmalo is as exposed to salt as anywhere in Goa: the beach is a few steps away and the wind comes straight off the water. Steel rusts quickly, natural fabrics hold damp, and anything outdoors needs marine-grade materials.
Sea-facing homes
Steel parts rust within a season near the sea. Ask for aluminium head rails, stainless or plastic chains and brackets, and avoid real wood slats, which warp in salt damp. PVC, faux-wood and coated polyester roller fabrics wipe clean and do not hold salt.
Holiday lets and guest houses
Guests are hard on blinds. Choose chain-operated rollers with metal brackets over delicate slatted blinds, in a blackout fabric for bedrooms. A single damaged roller is quick to replace between bookings.
