Dust decides the choice of blind in Dabolim more than anything else. In the dry months red laterite powder blows across the plateau and coats every ledge, and a slatted blind then has to be wiped one slat at a time. A roller or zebra blind is a single smooth face that cleans with one pass of a cloth. Wind is the second matter: windows here are big and unsheltered, so a blind hung in front of an open pane will knock against the frame. Seat it within the recess, with a heavy bottom bar or side channels. Bedrooms want blackout roller fabric, since many residents sleep by day.
- High floors facing the river: sunscreen rollers set inside the recess with side channels, which keep the wide view and stay still in a gust.
- Bedrooms in the gated colonies: blackout rollers for daytime sleep after a shift; they darken the room but do nothing for aircraft noise.
- Balconies of plateau apartments: clear PVC monsoon blinds only with cable or channel guides, since an unguided sheet flaps in the wind.
Dabolim sits on the plateau above the Zuari, between Vasco and Cortalim, and is where Goa's older airport and the naval air station are. The plateau has filled with apartment complexes and gated colonies whose residents work at the airport, the navy, Verna and Vasco.
Housing here is mostly mid-rise and high-rise apartments, many on upper floors with wide views. Windows are large and exposed. Blackout is in demand in bedrooms because of shift work at the airport, and many flats are let furnished.
The plateau is open to wind from the sea and the river. Aircraft noise is part of life, and red laterite dust blows in the dry months. Heavier lined curtains help a little with noise, and smooth blinds are quicker to clean of dust.
Apartments and town flats
Blinds suit flats because they take no floor or wall space and leave room for furniture under the window. Zebra blinds give privacy from the facing block while letting light in, and a blackout roller suits bedrooms that face a street light.
Hilltop and plateau homes
Blinds inside an open window rattle in wind. Fit them inside the recess where they are sheltered, choose a weighted bottom rail, or add side guides so the blind cannot swing. Outside, only blinds with cable or channel guides should be used on exposed sides.
