5 inch (127 mm) — The traditional wide standard

• ●Fewer vanes per window (bolder pattern)

4 inch (102 mm) — Middle ground (less common)

How many vanes will you have?

• ●3.5" vanes: number of vanes = window width (cm) ÷ 8 (roughly)
• ●5" vanes: number of vanes = window width (cm) ÷ 11 (roughly)

Example: 3 m (300 cm) wide window

• ●3.5" vanes = 300 ÷ 8 = ~38 vanes
• ●5" vanes = 300 ÷ 11 = ~27 vanes

Aesthetic impact:

When you fully OPEN a vertical blind, all vanes bunch together at one end of the track. This 'stacked' cluster of vanes needs SPACE beyond the window frame.

Stack-back space by vane width:

• ●3.5" vanes: approximately 6-8 cm of stack per 100 cm of blind width
• ●5" vanes: approximately 8-10 cm of stack per 100 cm of blind width

Example: 3 m wide vertical blind

• ●3.5" vanes: stack-back = 18-24 cm on one side (if drawn one-way to one end)
• ●5" vanes: stack-back = 24-30 cm on one side

Where does stack-back space come from?

Three options:

Option A: One-way draw (all vanes stack on ONE side)

• ●Best for: doors (vanes stack on hinge side), off-center views (stack to non-view side)
• ●Requires: full stack-back space on the chosen side (24-30 cm typical)

Option B: Two-way draw / split (vanes stack on BOTH sides)

• ●Best for: centered views (vanes stack symmetrically to sides)
• ●Requires: half stack-back on each side (12-15 cm typical)
• ●Better for visual symmetry

Option C: Wall extension of track BEYOND window

• ●Extend the track 15-25 cm past the window frame on the stack-back side
• ●Vanes fully open = they sit beyond the window opening, not blocking view
• ●Requires: clear wall space beyond window frame

Planning stack-back:

BEFORE ordering, measure how much wall space is beyond the window frame on each side. If less than needed for one-way draw, choose split draw. If neither works, choose panel-track blinds instead (which stack differently).

Sliding patio door special case:

For sliding doors, verticals should stack on the OPPOSITE side from where the door slides:

• ●Door slides RIGHT (opens on right) → vertical blinds stack on LEFT

This way, when door is open, blinds are stacked out of the way on the opposite side.

Pitfall 1: Choosing fabric vanes for kitchen/bathroom

Pitfall 2: Ignoring stack-back space

Ordering vertical blinds without checking wall space beyond window frame = stacked vanes cover part of the window opening even when 'open'. Loses 15-30 cm of view. Measure stack-back clearance BEFORE ordering.

Pitfall 3: Wrong draw direction for sliding doors

Ordering vertical blinds for a sliding door where the door slides RIGHT but blinds stack on the RIGHT too = blinds block the door opening. Every time you open the door, you have to first push the vanes aside. Blinds stack OPPOSITE to door slide direction.

Pitfall 4: 5-inch vanes on narrow windows

5" vanes on a 1.2 m wide window = only 11 vanes total. Looks sparse and disproportionate. Use 3.5" vanes for windows under 2 m; 5" only for wide commercial spaces.

Pitfall 5: No reinforced track for wide installations

Standard aluminum track sags in the middle when spanning 3 m+ if not reinforced. Sagging = vanes hang uneven. Order reinforced track for widths above 3 m.

Pitfall 6: Fabric vanes in high-AC-airflow spots

Fabric vanes rattle in strong AC airflow. If your AC vent points directly at the window, either aim vent elsewhere or use PVC vanes (heavier, less rattle-prone).

Pitfall 7: Forgetting fire-retardant certification for commercial

Office and commercial installations often require fire-retardant fabric or PVC. Verify compliance before ordering.
