Glare is the daily complaint in a bay-facing room at Chicalim: light comes off the Zuari as well as from the sky. A sunscreen roller answers it better than anything else, because the open weave dims the brightness and still shows the water through it. Bedrooms want a blackout roller as well, or one blind of each on a double bracket. Where the glazing is wide, fit two or three blinds next to each other and line the gaps up with the window frame members. Humidity and a trace of salt rule out real wood here; choose polyester or PVC-coated fabric, aluminium head rails and stainless or plastic chains.
Chicalim is a village on the southern shore of the Zuari bay, between Dabolim and Vasco. The road along the bay looks across the water, and the slopes above it have seen many new apartment complexes and villa projects, alongside the older village houses near the church.
New Chicalim homes are built for the view: wide windows and balconies facing the bay. Sheer curtains and sunscreen blinds that keep the view while cutting glare are the usual choice, with blackout in bedrooms.
The bay brings humidity and a steady breeze, with some salt though less than on the open coast. Rooms facing the water get reflected glare for much of the day.
Constant humidity near water encourages mildew on fabric blinds. Roller blinds in PVC-coated or polyester sunscreen fabric resist it, and can be wiped with a damp cloth. Real wood and untreated bamboo are better kept for drier rooms.
Wide glazing may need two or three blinds side by side, with the gaps lined up on the frame members. Motorised blinds on one remote or wall switch make sense where there are many, and on high windows that cannot be reached.
