Local notes · Mormugao taluka
Shut a house on the Bogmalo slope for the monsoon and the sofa is what suffers most. Foam and natural fabric take up the humid air, metal legs and springs rust from the salt that has settled on them, and the room smells when it is reopened for guests. Build against that: hardwood that has been properly seasoned for the frame, webbing underneath, and a zip-off cover in outdoor-grade or close-woven synthetic cloth. For a holiday let, firm foam and a spare set of covers keep the sofa presentable from one booking to the next, and a sofa bed sleeps an extra guest. In a villa living room that opens to a terrace, performance fabric is the realistic choice.
Bogmalo is a small bay with a sandy beach on the seaward side of the Mormugao peninsula, a few kilometres from Dabolim. It has a beach resort, a handful of hotels and guest houses, a fishing community, and apartments and villas on the slope behind the beach.
Homes and hotel rooms here face the sea or sit just behind it. Many are second homes and holiday lets that stand closed for part of the year, so furnishings must cope with being shut up in humid weather and opened again for guests.
Bogmalo is as exposed to salt as anywhere in Goa: the beach is a few steps away and the wind comes straight off the water. Steel rusts quickly, natural fabrics hold damp, and anything outdoors needs marine-grade materials.
Sea air is hard on sofas: metal legs and springs rust, and natural fabrics hold damp. Choose a seasoned hardwood frame, rust-proofed or webbing suspension, and a tightly woven synthetic or outdoor-grade fabric. Leather needs conditioning to stop it cracking in salt air.
Sofas in a let property should have removable, washable covers or a wipe-clean fabric, firm foam that will not sag, and a spare set of covers. A sofa bed adds a sleeping place without another room.
