Before ordering a new sofa for a Saligao house, look at the one already there. Many of these large village homes still hold their carved rosewood or teak seating, and such frames outlast several sets of upholstery; new webbing, foam and a fresh cover return them to daily use. Cotton and linen blends suit the rooms and are comfortable in a village that is warm but not salty. Mind the monsoon, when water stands in the surrounding fields and humidity lasts for months: keep the sofa a little off the outer wall, and prefer covers that unzip for washing. In the new villas, a sectional or a facing pair fills a big room; settle the layout on a plan.
Saligao is a village between Porvorim and Calangute, known for the Gothic-style church of Mãe de Deus standing among the fields. It has many well-kept old houses, a strong village community, and restaurants and villas that have come up in recent years.
Saligao houses are classic Goan village homes, often large, with balcões, wooden ceilings and tall windows. Several have been restored, and new villas have been built in a similar style.
The village is inland and green, sheltered from sea wind. Fields around it are wet in the monsoon, so humidity is high for several months.
Many old houses still have their carved rosewood or teak sofas. These frames are worth restoring more than once: new webbing, foam and fabric bring them back for far less than a new sofa of the same quality.
Inland homes are drier, so a wider range of fabrics works, including cotton and linen blends. Heat is the concern: leatherette becomes sticky in a room without air conditioning, and a breathable woven fabric is more comfortable.

Yes. We bring fabric samples to see against the wood, and suggest rods and finials that match it.
Yes, in the drier rooms. Saligao is inland, so real wood does better here than on the coast. Faux-wood is safer for bathrooms and kitchens.
