The Short Answer
Most living rooms look and work best with two layers on a double track: a sheer for the day and a heavier curtain for the evening. Hang them from near the ceiling to just above the floor, in a colour close to the walls, with about twice the track width in fabric.
That one sentence covers the four decisions people get stuck on: layers, length, colour and fullness. The rest of this guide explains each, with prices.
Start With the Room: Four Questions
Answer these before looking at a single fabric swatch.
- 1Which way does the window face? West and south-facing windows get hard afternoon sun, which heats the room and fades fabric. They need a lining or a blackout layer. North and east-facing windows manage with lighter curtains.
- 2Who can see in? A ground-floor hall or a flat facing another building needs a sheer for daytime privacy.
- 3Is there a TV opposite or beside the window? Glare on the screen is solved by a heavier curtain you can close, not by a sheer.
- 4Does the room run an air conditioner? A lined or heavier curtain keeps the cool air in and reduces the load on the AC.
Best Curtain Fabrics for a Living Room
| Fabric | The look | Light | Approx. price per metre | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sheer polyester | Light, airy | Filters daylight, gives daytime privacy | ₹250 | You want the day layer of a double track |
| Cotton and cotton blends | Casual, matte | Filters | ₹350–750 | A relaxed family room on a budget |
| Printed cotton | Patterned | Filters | ₹850 | The walls and sofa are plain and the room needs pattern |
| Linen and linen blends | Textured, natural | Soft filtered light | ₹850 | You want the most popular modern living room look |
| Triple-weave blackout | Smooth, heavier | Blocks 95–100% | ₹950 | West-facing windows, or a TV that suffers from glare |
| Velvet | Rich, formal | Blocks most light | ₹1,150 | A formal drawing room, or to soften echo in a large hall |
In a humid or sea-facing home, choose a linen blend over pure linen and avoid pure silk. Pure natural fibres take up moisture and can stretch in the monsoon. Each fabric is covered in detail in the guide to curtain types.
One Layer or Two?
Two layers on a double track is the standard for a living room. The sheer stays drawn all day. The main curtain is pulled across in the evening or when the sun is strong. You get privacy, light control and a fuller look.
One layer is enough when the window is not overlooked and does not take direct sun. Pick a medium-weight fabric such as a linen blend so the curtain has body on its own.
Motorised tracks suit wide or tall living room windows where the curtains are heavy or the track is hard to reach. Expect roughly ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 extra per motorised window.
Curtain Colour for the Living Room
Three approaches work. Pick one and stay with it.
- ●Blend with the walls. A curtain in the wall colour, or one shade darker, makes the room feel larger and calmer. This is the right choice for a small living room.
- ●Pick up an accent. Take a colour that already appears in the sofa, the rug or the cushions, and repeat it in the curtains.
- ●Contrast. Dark curtains on pale walls frame the window and suit a large hall with high ceilings.
| Wall colour | Curtains that work |
|---|---|
| White or off-white | Almost anything: ivory, beige, grey, sage, navy |
| Cream or beige | Ivory, warm white, taupe, olive, rust |
| Grey | White, charcoal, blush, mustard, teal |
| A strong colour wall | White, ivory or a pale neutral |
Dark and saturated colours fade faster in direct sun. On a west-facing window, choose a lighter shade or add a lining.
Length, Height and Fullness
Length: floor length, ending about 1 cm above the floor.
Height: fix the track or rod 10 to 15 cm above the window frame, or at the ceiling. Hanging curtains high makes the ceiling look taller.
Width: let the track run 15 to 25 cm past the frame on each side. Open curtains then stack on the wall, not over the glass, and the window looks wider.
Fullness: flat curtains look cheap. Use about twice the track width in fabric for eyelet and wave curtains, and 2.2 to 2.5 times for pinch pleats. An 8 ft track needs about 16 ft of fabric width for a wave heading.
The curtain fabric calculator turns your track width, drop and heading style into metres of fabric. For standard 5, 7 and 9 ft lengths, see the curtain size guide.
Heading Styles That Suit a Living Room
| Heading | Look | Fullness | Best with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wave (ripplefold) | Even S-shaped folds, modern | 2.0× | Linen, blackout, motorised tracks |
| Pinch pleat | Tailored, formal | 2.2–2.5× | Velvet, heavier fabrics, formal rooms |
| Eyelet | Casual, slides easily on a rod | 1.8–2.0× | Cotton, sheers, budget projects |
Tab-top and rod-pocket headings do not slide well. Keep them for curtains that stay in one position.

Five Mistakes to Avoid
- 1Curtains that stop short of the floor. This is the most common mistake and the easiest to see.
- 2A rod exactly as wide as the window. The open curtains then cover part of the glass.
- 3Too little fabric. A curtain pulled flat across a window has no folds and looks unfinished.
- 4Unlined curtains on a west-facing window. They fade and let the heat through.
- 5Choosing from a small swatch under shop lighting. Look at a large sample at home, by day and under your own lights.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which type of curtain is best for a living room?
For most living rooms, a sheer curtain paired with a heavier curtain on a double track works best. The sheer gives daytime privacy and soft light; the heavier curtain, in linen, cotton or a blackout weave, closes in the evening. If the room has only one track, choose a medium-weight linen blend.
What colour curtains suit a living room?
The safe choice is a shade close to the wall colour, or one shade darker, which makes the room look larger and calmer. For contrast, pick a colour already present in the sofa, rug or cushions. White and ivory sheers work with every wall colour.
How long should living room curtains be?
Floor length. The curtain should end about 1 cm above the floor so it hangs straight and stays clean. Sill-length curtains suit kitchens and small bedroom windows, not a living room.
How much do living room curtains cost in India?
A typical 8 ft × 8 ft living room window in a mid-range fabric costs approximately ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 including fabric, stitching and hardware. Sheer polyester starts at about ₹250 per metre and velvet at about ₹1,150 per metre. Prices vary with fabric and market rates.
