Dust and noise from the industrial estate, damp from the low ground near the Zuari: Marcaim asks a curtain to deal with both, in different parts of the village. Up towards the estate roads, where trucks pass, a lined curtain in a dense weave muffles a little of the noise and takes a vacuum nozzle without coming down, with a sheer nearest the glass, one that goes in the wash, to catch the grit first. Down in the old village near the Navdurga temple the air is damper, and a lighter fabric with a detachable lining dries better. People in rented rooms can keep to curtains on rods, which come down and move with them.
Marcaim, also written Madkai, is a village south-west of Ponda, near the Zuari. It is known for the Navdurga temple and for its industrial estate, one of the larger ones in the taluka, with the old village and its fields lying below.
There are traditional village houses near the temple and newer homes and rented rooms for people working in the estate. Factories and offices in the estate need blinds and, in places, strip curtains.
Marcaim is inland, with low ground near the river that is humid and prone to mosquitoes. The industrial estate adds dust and truck traffic.
Near busy roads, the port or an industrial estate, fine dust settles on fabric quickly and noise carries. A heavier, closely woven curtain with a lining dulls noise a little and can be vacuumed in place. Keep a washable sheer on the window side to take the dust first.
Away from the coast the problem is heat and dust, not salt. A blackout or thermal lining on west-facing windows keeps afternoon heat out, and a sheer behind it holds back road dust when windows are open. Darker, tighter weaves hide dust better than pale open ones.
