On the Farmagudi plateau a curtain has two jobs: to keep out the summer sun and to stay put when the breeze comes through an open window. Flats and independent houses around the campuses do well with a lined cotton print or a linen blend, with enough weight in the hem that it does not lift, and a track screwed into the slab above the window. A blackout lining earns its place on any window that faces west. In staff quarters and hostels, where many windows are covered at once, plain washable fabric on simple rods is easier to keep in order than anything delicate. With no salt up here, ordinary rods and rings are safe.

• Staff quarters near the institutes: plain mid-tone cotton or polyester curtains on rods, the same fabric through every room so one panel can stand in for another.
• West-facing bedrooms in upper-floor flats: a blackout-lined curtain on a slab-fixed track, with tie-backs to hold it when the windows are open to the breeze.
