Wallpaper is hung in vertical strips called drops. Every drop must run the full wall height, and a roll can only be cut into whole drops. That single fact is why the “total area ÷ roll area” shortcut under-orders almost every time.
Add up the lengths of every wall you are papering. For a full room that is 2 × (length + width).
Divide the perimeter by the roll width and round up. Each strip is one full-height drop.
Wall height plus 10 cm for trimming. If the paper has a pattern repeat, round the height UP to the next whole repeat first.
Divide the roll length by the drop length and round DOWN — a partial drop is waste, not coverage.

The last column is why roll length matters more than area: a 10 m roll on a 2.9 m wall yields 3 drops and 1.3 m of waste, regardless of how wide it is.

For a 12 × 12 ft room with 9 ft ceilings, one door and two windows, using a standard 53 cm × 10 m roll with no pattern repeat, you need about 10 rolls including 10% waste. A large pattern repeat (over 60 cm) pushes that to 14–15, because each strip has to be cut longer to align the design and a 10 m roll then yields only 2 drops instead of 3. Enter your exact figures above — ceiling height changes the answer more than anything else.
Because a roll can only be cut into whole, full-height strips ("drops"). A 10 m roll on a 2.9 m wall gives 3 drops with 1.3 m left over — that remainder is waste, not usable wall. Square-metre maths counts it as coverage and under-orders. Professional hangers count drops, and so does this tool.
Partly. The strip above a door still has to be hung from a full-height drop, so a door does not save a whole strip. This calculator credits roughly one strip for every two openings, which matches how hangers estimate. For a room with many large windows, deduct their area from your own figure with care — running short mid-wall means a second dye lot that may not match.
Pattern repeat is the vertical distance before the design repeats, printed on the roll label. Each strip must be cut to a whole number of repeats so adjacent strips line up. A 64 cm repeat on a 2.7 m wall means cutting each drop to 3.2 m instead of 2.8 m — about 15% more fabric. Set the repeat above and the tool handles it.
The tool works in whatever roll you select. "Standard European" and "Indian" presets are single rolls (about 5.3 m²). The "US Double Roll" preset is 27 in × 27 ft (about 5.6 m²). If your supplier quotes double rolls but you selected single, halve the result and round up.
