On a wall that faces the sea, look for a pale salt bloom or lifting paint; if either is there, that wall is for PVC panels, not paper. Inner walls, once primed against fungus, take vinyl wallpaper well, and an air-conditioned bedroom holds it best of all. Villas here have walls big enough for a mural or a bold imported pattern. In a house let through the season, choose a hard-wearing design and keep it behind the bed and off the corridor.

Villas and gated homes
Large walls suit large patterns and murals, which would be lost in a small room. Double-height walls need the pattern planned from the top so the repeat lands well at eye level. Air-conditioned rooms hold wallpaper very well.
