In Farmagudi blinds are needed by the dozen as often as singly. Classrooms, offices and hostel rooms around the engineering college want something plain that survives daily use, and a chain-operated roller or a vertical blind does that. Plan around the plateau wind: with the window open, a blind hanging across it knocks against the frame all afternoon, so it should sit inside the recess and carry a heavy bottom rail. On the side that takes the monsoon rain, shut the window behind the blind when a storm is due. Brackets and chains are not at risk from rust here the way they are on the coast.
- Classrooms and offices: vertical blinds or sunscreen rollers, which cut glare on a board or screen without making the room dark.
- Hostel rooms and staff quarters: chain-operated blackout rollers, simple to replace one at a time and quick to wipe clean.
- Independent houses on the open plateau: roller blinds fitted within the window recess, with side guides where the opening faces the wind.
Farmagudi is the plateau just outside Ponda on the Panjim road. It is an education centre, home to the Goa College of Engineering and other institutes, with a hilltop park, a temple and a small fort memorial, and housing for staff and families around the campuses.
Housing is a mix of institutional quarters, hostels, flats and independent houses. Staff quarters and hostels need plain, durable window coverings in numbers; private houses are furnished like any family home.
The plateau is open and breezy, hot in summer and exposed to driving rain in the monsoon. There is no salt.
Hilltop and plateau homes
Blinds inside an open window rattle in wind. Fit them inside the recess where they are sheltered, choose a weighted bottom rail, or add side guides so the blind cannot swing. Outside, only blinds with cable or channel guides should be used on exposed sides.
Inland homes
Inland rooms need shade from long, hot afternoons. A sunscreen roller on east and south windows cuts glare and keeps the view; a blackout roller or a zebra blind on west windows stops heat and light together. Dust wipes off roller fabric more easily than off slats.
