A flat on the Dabolim plateau asks three things of a curtain: darkness for people who sleep after a night shift at the airport, some weight against the noise of aircraft, and a fixing that holds when wind off the Zuari comes through a large open window. A closely woven fabric with a full blackout lining, wider than the window and reaching the floor, answers the first two as far as cloth can; it softens noise but will not stop it. The track should be screwed into the slab, and the hem weighted. Put a washable sheer nearest the glass, because red laterite dust settles on it through the dry months.
Dabolim sits on the plateau above the Zuari, between Vasco and Cortalim, and is where Goa's older airport and the naval air station are. The plateau has filled with apartment complexes and gated colonies whose residents work at the airport, the navy, Verna and Vasco.
Housing here is mostly mid-rise and high-rise apartments, many on upper floors with wide views. Windows are large and exposed. Blackout is in demand in bedrooms because of shift work at the airport, and many flats are let furnished.
The plateau is open to wind from the sea and the river. Aircraft noise is part of life, and red laterite dust blows in the dry months. Heavier lined curtains help a little with noise, and smooth blinds are quicker to clean of dust.
Flats usually have standard-height windows and a neighbour close by. A sheer for the day and a blackout for the night, on a double track, gives privacy without darkness. Where a split air conditioner sits above the window, a ceiling track lets the curtain hang clear of it.
High ground catches wind from every side. Curtains on open windows billow and pull at their fixings, so tracks are screwed into the slab or a solid lintel, and weighted hems or tie-backs keep fabric from flying. Sheers with a little weight hang better than very light voiles.
Dabolim is about thirty-five minutes from the showroom. We measure free of charge and usually combine a visit with Vasco, Chicalim and Bogmalo.
A heavy, lined curtain that covers the whole window softens noise slightly and stops echo in the room. It will not block aircraft noise; that needs better glazing.
Blinds fitted inside the window recess, or curtains on a track fixed firmly to the slab, with weighted hems so they do not billow.
