The building stands on a road in Margao, with shops on the ground floor and five balcony windows on the first floor. The job was outdoor blinds for all five, hung on the outside of the building so that, when lowered, they keep sun and rain off the balconies themselves and screen them from the road, and when rolled up, leave the openings clear.
Every blind hangs on the outside of the building, so its brackets had to be fixed to the outer wall above each opening, at first-floor height. That cannot be done from inside the balcony. Our fitter climbed out beyond the balcony railings, drilled the wall above each opening and fixed the brackets while working at height, five times over. This is the slowest and riskiest part of any outdoor blind job, and it is why outdoor blinds need a fitter who is used to working outside a building.
We made the blinds in PVC chick: thin PVC strips woven with cord to look like bamboo chick blinds. Unlike untreated bamboo, PVC does not soak up rain, so a blind that hangs outside through the monsoon keeps its shape and does not rot or grow mould. Each blind was made to the size of its own opening, because the five openings are not all the same width. The blinds took one week to make. On site, once the brackets were fixed, the blinds were hung and the job was done in about two hours.
All five balcony windows now have roll-up blinds on the outside of the building. Lowered, they shade the openings and screen them from the road; rolled up, they leave the view open. From order to fitted, the job took one week.

Bamboo is a natural material. Left out in the Goa monsoon it soaks up water, and in time it can grow mould, warp or rot unless it is treated and looked after. PVC strips do not absorb water, so blinds that hang outside in the rain keep their shape and can simply be washed down. Bamboo still suits covered verandas and balconies that stay mostly dry.
