Varca is flat, and nothing stands between the beach and the villas but open fields, so salt travels well inland. Curtain hardware should be chosen for it even in a house well back from the sand: aluminium or stainless tracks, nylon gliders, no plain steel hooks. The villas have veranda doors and wide garden-facing glass that need generous curtains, and a ripple-fold heading stacks back tidily beside a sliding door. Polyester and polyester blends, some close to linen in look, wash easily and do not stiffen with salt. In a house let through the season, bedrooms need a true blackout. Near the church, where the air is stiller and more humid, use a lining that unhooks to be washed.
Varca is a coastal village south of Benaulim, known for its wide, quiet beach and the white church of Our Lady of Gloria facing the fields. It has several large resorts set in their own grounds, and many villas and holiday complexes along the lanes between the church and the sea.
Varca has more villas than most South Goa villages: detached houses with gardens, verandas and often a pool, owned as second homes or let through the season. They are furnished to a higher standard than the average holiday flat.
The beach is open and breezy, and salt carries well inland across the flat fields. Homes near the church are more sheltered but humid in the monsoon.
Salt in the air stiffens fabric and rusts ordinary hooks and rings. Choose polyester or polyester-blend fabrics that can be machine washed, and aluminium or stainless tracks with nylon gliders. Keep curtains a hand's width clear of windows that are left open to the breeze, so spray does not wet the hem.
Large sliding doors and double-height glazing need wide curtains that draw easily. Wave or ripple-fold headings on a ceiling track stack back neatly, and a motor is worth it on spans too wide or too tall to pull by hand. Plan the track recess while the ceiling is being made.
