Everything metal in a Siridao window is on borrowed time unless it is the right metal. The village looks straight onto the open Zuari estuary, and salt, damp and wind reach every house along the shore, so a curtain track here is aluminium, with nylon gliders, put up with stainless screws; ordinary steel rings and hooks stain the fabric with rust. Fabric should be polyester or a blend that washes and dries fast, since cotton and silk stiffen with salt. The village houses stand close together and their windows are small, so a single washable sheer often gives all the privacy needed. Hang it above the frame, with the hem short of any window left open to the spray.
Siridao is a small fishing village on the Zuari estuary, below the plateau of Bambolim. It has a pebbly beach, a chapel on the headland, and a feast in spring that draws people from across Goa.
Homes are traditional village houses of the fishing community, close together along the shore, with a few newer houses and villas on the slope behind.
The village faces the open estuary. Salt, humidity and wind off the water affect every house, and metal rusts quickly.
Salt in the air stiffens fabric and rusts ordinary hooks and rings. Choose polyester or polyester-blend fabrics that can be machine washed, and aluminium or stainless tracks with nylon gliders. Keep curtains a hand's width clear of windows that are left open to the breeze, so spray does not wet the hem.
Old houses have tall windows, often with wooden shutters and a deep sill. Curtains are hung from above the frame, not inside it, so the shutters still open. Ceilings are high, so allow for long drops, and choose a rod and finials that suit the woodwork.
