Local notes · Bardez taluka
Getting a sofa into a Porvorim flat is the first problem, before fabric or colour. The complexes vary: some have a lift that takes a three-seater on end, others only a turning stair. Measure both, and the front door, then order the sofa in sections if there is any doubt. Decide, too, which hand an L-shape needs, by standing where the TV will be. The second matter is light. Large sliding doors on the plateau let sun fall across the seat for hours, and ordinary dyed cloth pales along that edge; a fade-resistant or outdoor-grade fabric holds its colour. Working families with children do well with a tight weave that sponges clean.
Porvorim sits on the plateau across the Mandovi from Panjim, along the highway to Mapusa. It has the state legislative assembly and secretariat, and has grown into the largest residential suburb in North Goa, with apartment complexes, bungalow colonies such as Defence Colony and Alto Porvorim, shops and schools.
Porvorim offers every kind of modern home: flats in large complexes, row houses and independent bungalows. Most are owner-occupied by working families. Large windows and sliding doors are standard, and many homes have a balcony that needs shade or rain protection.
The plateau is open and breezy. Upper floors get strong wind and driving rain in the monsoon, and laterite dust in the dry months. Homes along the highway have traffic noise.
Homes on high ground are airy, and fabrics dry well, but strong sun through large windows fades upholstery. Choose solution-dyed or fade-resistant fabric for a sofa that sits in a sunny window.
Measure the lift, the stairwell and the door before choosing a sofa for a flat. A sofa made in sections, or with removable legs and arms, goes up where a one-piece sofa will not. An L-shape should be ordered for the correct hand.
Porvorim is about fifty minutes from the showroom, just across the Mandovi bridge. We measure free of charge and visit with Socorro, Sangolda and Penha de Franca.
Clear PVC monsoon blinds on the open sides. They keep rain out, let light in, and roll up in the dry season.
