A bedroom in a Corlim flat or row house is usually just big enough for the bed, so the headboard should take as little depth as possible: a padded panel fixed to the wall, the width of the bed or a little wider. The style is best kept flat. Deep button tufting gathers the fine dust that drifts in from the industrial estate, and it is tedious to clean; smooth panels or shallow channels wipe over quickly. Leatherette and close woven fabrics both suit. Velvet is possible in this drier inland air, but only in a room kept shut. On the humid low ground, mount the board with a small gap behind it.
