Standard Curtain Sizes: 5, 7 and 9 Feet
Ready-made curtains in India come in three standard lengths. Each panel is about 4 feet wide.
| Sold as | Length | Width per panel | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Window curtain, 5 feet | 5 ft (152 cm) | About 4 ft (120 cm) | Windows with a sill |
| Door curtain, 7 feet | 7 ft (213 cm) | About 4 ft (120 cm) | Standard doors, and floor-length curtains on most windows |
| Long door curtain, 9 feet | 9 ft (274 cm) | About 4 ft (120 cm) | Tall doors, balcony doors, rods fixed near the ceiling |
If your measurement falls between two sizes, for example 8 feet, a ready-made curtain will be either short or bunched on the floor. That is when to have the curtain made to length.
Which Length Do You Need?
Decide where the curtain should end, then measure from the rod to that point.
| Where it ends | Use it for | Usual standard size |
|---|---|---|
| Sill length, 1 cm above the sill | Kitchens, bathrooms, windows above a counter or bed | 5 feet |
| Below sill, 15–20 cm under it | Bedroom and study windows with furniture below | 5 feet |
| Floor length, 1 cm above the floor | Living rooms, bedrooms, all doors | 7 or 9 feet |
| Puddle, 10–15 cm resting on the floor | Formal rooms with heavy fabric; collects dust | Made to length |
Floor length is the right choice for most rooms. It looks finished and keeps out more light and heat than a short curtain.
How Many Panels for Your Rod
Curtains need about twice the rod width in fabric to hang in folds. Since a standard panel is 4 feet wide, the rule is simple: one panel for every 2 feet of rod.
| Rod or track width | Curtain width needed (2×) | Standard 4 ft panels |
|---|---|---|
| 4 ft | 8 ft | 2 |
| 6 ft | 12 ft | 3 |
| 8 ft | 16 ft | 4 |
| 10 ft | 20 ft | 5 |
| 12 ft | 24 ft | 6 |
For a richer, fuller look, or for pinch pleat headings, add one more panel. An even number of panels lets the curtains part in the middle.
How to Measure Before You Buy
Width: measure the rod or track, not the window. The rod should run 15 to 25 cm past the frame on each side.
Length: measure from the rod down to where the curtain should end.
- 1For eyelet curtains, measure from the top of the rod and add about 3 cm, because the fabric stands a little above the rod.
- 2For curtains on rings or hooks, measure from the bottom of the ring or the hook eye.
- 3Measure at the left, centre and right. Floors are rarely level. Use the shortest figure for floor-length curtains.
Check the rod height first. A rod fixed 10 to 15 cm above a 7 ft door frame needs a curtain longer than 7 ft to reach the floor. Decide the rod position, then measure.
The curtain fabric calculator has presets for sill, below-sill, floor and puddle lengths and works in centimetres, inches or feet.
When a Standard Size Will Not Work
Ready-made sizes cover ordinary windows and doors. Order made-to-measure curtains when:
- ●The drop is between sizes, such as 6 or 8 feet
- ●The rod is fixed at the ceiling in a room with a 10 feet ceiling
- ●The window is wider than 12 feet, where many narrow panels look patchy
- ●You want a wave or pinch pleat heading, which is stitched to the track width
- ●The window is arched, bayed or in a corner
Made-to-measure curtains are cut to your drop to the centimetre and stitched to the width of your track. See custom curtains and door curtains, or read how to calculate curtain fabric for the full method.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard size of a door curtain in India?
The standard door curtain is 7 feet long (about 213 cm) and about 4 feet wide (about 120 cm) per panel. Tall doors and floor-to-ceiling openings use the 9 feet (about 274 cm) length.
What is the standard size of a window curtain?
The standard window curtain is 5 feet long (about 152 cm) and about 4 feet wide per panel. It suits a window with a sill. For a floor-length look on the same window, use a 7 feet curtain.
How many curtain panels do I need for a 6 feet wide window?
Three standard 4-feet-wide panels. The combined width of the curtains should be about twice the rod width so they hang in folds, so a 6 feet rod needs about 12 feet of curtain.
Are 7 feet curtains long enough for a door?
Yes for a standard door of about 6.5 to 7 feet, when the rod is fixed just above the frame. If the rod is fixed higher, near the ceiling, or the door is taller than 7 feet, choose 9 feet curtains or have them made to length.
