Inland, on gently rising ground and with no salt in the air, Sangolda has some of the kindest walls in Goa for wallpaper. In the newer villas and row houses almost any type will hold, including textured, 3D and imported designs, and tall living-room walls give a large pattern the space it needs. Plan the repeat from the top of a double-height wall so it falls well at eye level. The exception is the old family house. Its lime-plastered walls must breathe, and vinyl over them can trap moisture; paper a later partition and leave the original walls painted. Any outer wall that takes the full monsoon rain should be checked for seepage first.
- Double-height villa living rooms: a large-scale mural or imported roll on the main wall, set out from the ceiling downwards.
- Old houses in the village: wallpaper on a newer brick partition only, after the lime walls around it have been tested for damp.
- Bedrooms and studies in row houses: textured or 3D vinyl behind the bed or desk, chosen alongside the curtains and upholstery.
Sangolda is a village along the road from Porvorim towards Saligao and Calangute. That road is known for its furniture, antique and lifestyle stores, and the village behind it has old houses, a chapel-dotted landscape and new villa developments.
Sangolda homes are a mix of old family houses and newer villas and row houses, many owned by people with an interest in design, given what the main road sells. Furnishing tends to be considered and coordinated.
The village is inland on gently rising ground. There is no salt, moderate humidity, and good shade from trees. Houses on the main road get dust.
Villas and gated homes
Large walls suit large patterns and murals, which would be lost in a small room. Double-height walls need the pattern planned from the top so the repeat lands well at eye level. Air-conditioned rooms hold wallpaper very well.
Inland homes
Dry inland walls are the kindest to wallpaper. Almost any type can be used, including textured and fabric-backed papers. The risk here is a wall that takes the full monsoon rain from outside, which should be checked for seepage before papering.
