Sofas in Fatorda: Custom Designs & Local Expertise

A sofa for a Fatorda flat starts with how it will get indoors: lift size, the bend in the staircase, and how wide the entrance door opens. Where any of these is tight, the sofa is made in sections and joined inside. The living rooms themselves have a long window wall, and an L-shape often fits, provided the order states left or right correctly, so the chaise does not block the balcony door. Being inland, Fatorda allows cotton and linen blends that would not last near a beach. Rooms here are warm, though, and leatherette turns sticky without air conditioning, so a breathable woven cover is kinder. Keep the sofa out of the direct afternoon sun where you can.

• Flats with a sliding balcony door: an L-shaped sofa with the short arm on the wall side, leaving the door clear to open.
• Independent houses with a large hall: two sofas facing each other in a cotton-blend weave, sized from the floor plan.
• Family homes in the housing colonies: an existing sofa with a good frame, stripped and redone with new foam and cloth, when its size still suits the room.
