Shade is scarce around Curti's new buildings, and a balcony that faces west is too hot to use from midday. A retractable awning over it shades both the balcony and the sliding door behind, which keeps the living room cooler as well. Two cautions apply. In a housing society the facade is common property, so get written consent before any bracket goes into the outer wall, and keep the projection modest. And the awning needs enough slope for monsoon rain to run off its front edge. The shops along the bypass have a different need: cover over the frontage for goods and customers. Mid-tone fabric hides road dust better than cream.
Curti adjoins Ponda on the highway towards Old Goa and Panjim. Once a separate village, it is now the fastest-growing residential part of the Ponda area, with apartment complexes, housing societies and shops along the bypass.
Most Curti homes are flats bought by young families in the last fifteen years or so. They have modern aluminium sliding windows and a balcony, and are furnished step by step as budgets allow.
Curti is inland and warm. New buildings stand in the open with little shade, so upper-floor flats take strong sun, and the highway brings dust and noise.
Inland, an awning is mostly for sun. One over a west-facing sit-out or window keeps the wall and room behind it cooler. Fix it with enough pitch for monsoon rain to run off, not pool.
On an apartment balcony, check the housing society's rules before fixing anything to the facade. A drop-arm or vertical awning that stays within the balcony line is usually accepted where a projecting one is not.
Curti is about thirty-five minutes from the showroom. We measure free of charge, on the same visit as Ponda.
Bedroom blinds or curtains for privacy and sleep, then a mosquito net on the balcony door, then the living room. Everything can be measured in one visit and fitted in stages.
