Within a kilometre of Colva beach, any steel in a blind is on borrowed time. Brackets pit, chains seize and bottom bars leave rust lines on the fabric. Specify aluminium head rails and chains of stainless or plastic, and prefer PVC, faux-wood or coated polyester to real timber slats, which warp. For the holiday flats and guest rooms that make up so much of Colva, a chain-operated blackout roller is the workhorse: guests cannot do much harm to it, and a single blind is easily replaced before the next arrival. Sand gets indoors here, and it wipes off a roller far more readily than off slats. Balconies in the gated complexes can take clear PVC monsoon blinds.
- Bedrooms in holiday flats: blackout rollers on aluminium rails with stainless chains, in a neutral shade that suits any visitor.
- Hotel and guest-house rooms near the beach: faux-wood venetians or coated rollers, never real wood, which twists in the salt damp.
- Balconies of flats left empty in the monsoon: clear PVC blinds lowered so that monsoon rain does not soak the furniture.
Colva is the best-known beach of South Goa, six kilometres west of Margao at the end of the Colva road. The village behind the beach has the church of Our Lady of Mercy, family homes among coconut groves and paddy fields, and a strip of hotels, guest houses and restaurants near the shore.
Colva has three kinds of property: village houses set back from the beach, holiday apartments in gated complexes, and hotels and guest houses. Holiday flats are often owned by people who live elsewhere and are furnished for letting.
Within a kilometre of the beach, salt and humidity are constant, and sand finds its way indoors. Further inland, among the fields, the air is damp in the monsoon and mosquitoes are plentiful in the evening.
Sea-facing homes
Steel parts rust within a season near the sea. Ask for aluminium head rails, stainless or plastic chains and brackets, and avoid real wood slats, which warp in salt damp. PVC, faux-wood and coated polyester roller fabrics wipe clean and do not hold salt.
Holiday lets and guest houses
Guests are hard on blinds. Choose chain-operated rollers with metal brackets over delicate slatted blinds, in a blackout fabric for bedrooms. A single damaged roller is quick to replace between bookings.
