Outdoor blinds matter as much as indoor ones in Betalbatim. A villa veranda or pool pavilion closed in with clear PVC blinds stays dry through the monsoon and usable when the wind comes off the sea, and the blinds roll up when the weather turns kind. Indoors, the wide glazed openings take two or three rollers abreast, joins hidden behind the door frames, worked from one remote. In a house that is let, keep to robust chain or motor rollers with metal brackets and blackout fabric in bedrooms. Near the beach no part should be plain steel, only aluminium, plastic or stainless, and real wood slats are left out of the plan.
- Verandas and pool pavilions: clear PVC monsoon blinds on corrosion-proof hardware, rolled away once the rains end.
- Wide living-room glazing: sunscreen rollers in a line, motorised together, so the garden stays in view.
- Bedrooms in holiday homes: blackout rollers on sturdy brackets, simple for a caretaker to replace if one is damaged.
Betalbatim is a quiet coastal village north of Colva, reached through coconut groves and fields. Its beach is uncrowded, backed by casuarina trees, and the village has a few well-known restaurants, some resorts, and a growing number of villas and holiday homes.
New building in Betalbatim is mostly independent villas and small gated clusters, many of them second homes. They have large glazed openings to gardens and pools, which call for wide curtains, outdoor blinds and outdoor cushions.
The village runs from the beach inland, so exposure varies: sea-facing plots get salt and wind, while homes among the fields are sheltered but humid and close to standing water in the monsoon.
Sea-facing homes
Steel parts rust within a season near the sea. Ask for aluminium head rails, stainless or plastic chains and brackets, and avoid real wood slats, which warp in salt damp. PVC, faux-wood and coated polyester roller fabrics wipe clean and do not hold salt.
Villas and gated homes
Wide glazing may need two or three blinds side by side, with the gaps lined up on the frame members. Motorised blinds on one remote or wall switch make sense where there are many, and on high windows that cannot be reached.
