Tall windows are the pride of a restored Siolim house, and the curtain has to respect both the window and the wall around it. Old plaster is spared by fixing the rod to the timber lintel or the frame, above the opening, so the shutters swing clear and the full height shows. Beside the Chapora the air stays damp and winter mornings bring mist, so thick interlined drapes are a mistake; choose a light linen blend, thin cotton or faux silk with a separate lining that unhooks for washing, and let air pass behind. The new villas along the river have wide glazing instead, where ripple-fold sheers on a recessed track, motorised if very wide, draw neatly.
Siolim is a large village on the south bank of the Chapora river, where the bridge crosses to Pernem. It is known for its church of St Anthony, its Zagor festival and its fine old houses, many now restored as homes and guest houses, with new villas along the river and the fields.
Siolim has some of the best-preserved Indo-Portuguese houses in Bardez, with wide balcões, tall windows and internal courtyards, and a growing number of designer villas. Both kinds are popular as high-end stays.
The river and the fields make Siolim humid, with mist on winter mornings. Old walls hold damp, and mosquitoes are common near the water. Salt is slight.
Rooms beside water stay damp for much of the year, and heavy lined curtains can smell musty by September. Lighter fabrics that dry quickly do better, with a separate blackout lining that can be taken off and washed. Leave a gap between curtain and wall so air moves behind it.
Old houses have tall windows, often with wooden shutters and a deep sill. Curtains are hung from above the frame, not inside it, so the shutters still open. Ceilings are high, so allow for long drops, and choose a rod and finials that suit the woodwork.
