Custom Curtains in Socorro: Bespoke Designs & Local Expertise

Shade defines Socorro. Trees and gardens keep the sun off most houses, so the usual inland worry about afternoon heat matters less here than light: a heavily curtained room in this village is a dark room. Sheers, linens and cotton prints suit the old houses, hung above tall frames so the wooden shutters still fold back. In the low-lying parts near the fields and springs, where rooms feel damp from June, keep curtains unlined or use a lining that unhooks, and let them hang clear of the wall. The new villas towards Porvorim are another case, with wide sliding doors on higher, breezier ground; those want ripple-fold curtains on a ceiling track, and a motor on the widest spans.

• Old houses in the lanes: long cotton or linen curtains on a wooden or brass-finish rod fixed above the window frame.
• Low-lying houses near the fields: light washable fabrics without heavy lining, taken down and laundered once the rains end.
• New villas on the Porvorim side: ripple-fold sheers and blackout on a recessed ceiling track, planned while the ceiling is being built.
