Local notes · Canacona taluka
Seating in Palolem is sat on in wet swimwear, dusted with sand and then shut in a humid room for the monsoon. A sofa made for that life is built on hardwood, sprung with webbing instead of steel, filled with firm foam, and dressed in zip-off covers that go in the wash, with a second set to use while the first dries. Outdoor-grade fabric or a tight synthetic weave is the right skin; cotton and velvet hold damp and salt. Bright colours suit the place, but mid-tones and patterns forgive more. Guest houses and cafes with worn seating can have frames repaired and re-covered while they are closed. Leave out steel legs and exposed staples.
Palolem is a crescent-shaped bay near Chaudi in Canacona, with a wooded headland at each end. It is the busiest beach in the far south, lined in season with beach huts, cafes and guest houses, and with homestays and small hotels in the lanes behind.
Much of the accommodation is seasonal: huts are put up after the monsoon and taken down before it. Permanent buildings are guest houses, small hotels and family homes that let rooms. Furnishing is simple, bright and has to be easy to store or wash.
The bay is sheltered from the heaviest surf but not from salt or humidity. Sand gets into everything, and the monsoon is long and very wet.
Sea air is hard on sofas: metal legs and springs rust, and natural fabrics hold damp. Choose a seasoned hardwood frame, rust-proofed or webbing suspension, and a tightly woven synthetic or outdoor-grade fabric. Leather needs conditioning to stop it cracking in salt air.
Sofas in a let property should have removable, washable covers or a wipe-clean fabric, firm foam that will not sag, and a spare set of covers. A sofa bed adds a sleeping place without another room.
