Where an old port or railway officer's bungalow at Mormugao still has a solid teak or rosewood sofa, the frame is worth far more than its tired cushions suggest. Rewebbing, new foam and a fresh cover bring it back, and that is usually the better course here than buying new. Whatever the frame, the cover has to stand salt, damp and harbour dust at once. A tightly woven synthetic or an outdoor-grade fabric does; cotton and linen hold moisture, and velvet traps grit. Avoid exposed steel legs, which rust. In the compact staff quarters, a two-seater in wipe-clean leatherette is easier to live with than a large fabric suite.
Mormugao is the headland at the mouth of the Zuari, where the harbour and its berths are. The area around the port, including Sada and the Headland, has port trust quarters, old bungalows built for port and railway officers, and housing on the hill above the harbour.
Housing ranges from large officers' bungalows with verandas and tall windows to compact staff quarters and flats. The bungalows have high ceilings and many windows, which means a good deal of curtain; the quarters have small windows where a blind is neater.
The headland is surrounded by water and takes the full force of monsoon wind. Salt, damp and port dust together make this the hardest place in South Goa for fabrics and metal fittings. Everything should be washable and rust-proof.
Sea air is hard on sofas: metal legs and springs rust, and natural fabrics hold damp. Choose a seasoned hardwood frame, rust-proofed or webbing suspension, and a tightly woven synthetic or outdoor-grade fabric. Leather needs conditioning to stop it cracking in salt air.
Dust and grit wear fabric where it is rubbed in. A tightly woven fabric or leatherette that can be wiped is easier to keep clean than velvet or a loose weave.

Yes. We fit blinds and curtains in staff quarters and officers' bungalows, and can quote for several units together.
Choose washable polyester fabrics and keep a sheer on the window side to take the dust. Sheers can be washed monthly; the main curtain much less often.
