A blind earns its place in Aquem wherever a curtain would be in the way. The compact flats in the newer blocks have little wall to spare, and a roller or zebra blind sits inside the window recess and leaves the space below for a bed or a desk. The old houses are another job: their wooden frames are seldom square and the shutters swing inward, so a roman or wooden venetian blind is fixed to the face of the frame or to the wall above it. Close to the railway line, pick roller fabric over slats, because dust from the trains wipes off one smooth surface far faster.
- Flats in the newer blocks: a zebra blind in the living room for privacy from the building opposite, and a blackout roller in each bedroom.
- Old houses with a front balcão: roman blinds in a cotton print on the wooden windows, mounted over the frame so the shutters keep working.
- Houses near Madgaon station: sunscreen rollers that wipe clean, in a mid grey or beige that hides the film of dust between cleans.
Aquem lies on the eastern side of Margao, around and beyond the Madgaon railway station, and is usually spoken of as Aquem Alto on the higher ground and Aquem Baixo below. It is an old, settled residential area where family houses stand next to newer apartment blocks.
Older Aquem houses are single-storey family homes with a front balcão, wooden windows and tiled roofs. The newer blocks are compact flats. A common request here is to furnish one floor of a family house that has been divided between generations, where each room has a different window size.
Aquem is inland and fairly sheltered. The lower parts hold water after heavy rain, and ground-floor rooms there can be damp, so we check walls before recommending wallpaper. Train and road traffic near the station bring dust.
Apartments and town flats
Blinds suit flats because they take no floor or wall space and leave room for furniture under the window. Zebra blinds give privacy from the facing block while letting light in, and a blackout roller suits bedrooms that face a street light.
Old Goan houses
Old window frames are rarely square, and their shutters open inward. Each blind is measured at three points and usually fixed to the face of the frame or the wall above. Roman and wooden blinds suit the woodwork better than plain rollers.
