Aquem's two kinds of home ask for different curtains. In the single-storey family houses, wooden windows vary from room to room, so each curtain is cut to its own window and hung from a rod above the frame, leaving the shutters free to swing. In the compact flats of the newer blocks, a sheer and a blackout on a double track do the work in very little space. Being inland, Aquem has no salt to worry about; the trouble is dust from the trains and the roads near Madgaon station. A washable sheer on the window side catches it, and closely woven fabrics in mid-tones show it least.

• Divided family houses: one fabric through the whole floor ties together rooms whose windows are all different widths and heights, each curtain made to its own opening.
• Rooms facing the station side: a lined, tightly woven curtain over a sheer that can be taken down and washed when the dust builds up.
• Ground-floor rooms in Aquem Baixo: lighter unlined cotton or polyester that dries quickly, hung a little off the wall where damp lingers after rain.
