Orlim is one of the few villages this close to the coast where a wooden blind is a safe choice. The sea air is spent by the time it has crossed Varca, so wooden venetians and roman blinds can be used in the old houses, where they sit well with shutters and old woodwork. The limit is the monsoon, when the fields flood and the air turns humid: keep real wood and bamboo to upper or well-aired rooms, and use polyester roller fabric in rooms that stay closed. Old frames are rarely true, so each blind is sized at three points. In the new bungalows, wide glazing may need two blinds side by side.

• Long verandas: bamboo blinds on the sunny side for shade, rolled up and kept dry through the heaviest rain.
