Blown sand is constant in Morjim; the beach is wide, the village sits right behind it, and wind from the river mouth carries grit indoors. Rugs here should hide it and release it. Polypropylene rugs, machine-made in dark patterns, do both, and they dry fast after washing. Because so many properties close for the monsoon, rugs must also store well: washed, dried through and rolled, never folded, in a room with some ventilation, and not left on a damp ground floor where a rubber backing would trap moisture. Wool and jute are poor choices this close to salt water. Fitted carpet makes no sense in a building shut up for the rains.
- Seasonal resort rooms: small patterned synthetic rugs beside each bed, washed and rolled away dry when the monsoon closure begins.
- Ground floors near the Chapora river mouth: loose rugs without rubber backing, lifted regularly so the floor beneath can dry.
- Winter-let villas: a hard-wearing polypropylene rug under the seating and a mat at every door for sand.
Morjim lies on the north side of the Chapora river mouth, in Pernem. Its wide beach is a nesting site for olive ridley turtles, and the village behind it has resorts, beach restaurants and villas, popular with long-stay winter visitors.
Property is mostly seasonal: resorts, villas let through the winter, and guest houses. Many places close for the monsoon, so furnishing must store well and come out again fresh.
Morjim is exposed to both sea and river. Salt, wind and blown sand affect anything outdoors, and the monsoon is rough at the river mouth.
Sea-facing homes
Wool and jute hold moisture near the sea and can smell. Synthetic rugs in polypropylene or nylon dry quickly and resist mildew, and can be taken outside to air. Wall-to-wall carpet suits only air-conditioned rooms.
Riverside and backwater homes
Ground floors near water are damp underfoot in the monsoon. Use rugs that can be lifted and dried, not fitted carpet, and avoid rubber-backed rugs that trap moisture against the floor.

What should a seasonal resort store over the monsoon?
Cushions and curtains, washed and fully dry, in a ventilated room. Blinds can be rolled up and left in place.
