SPC stands for stone plastic composite. Each plank has a dense core of limestone powder and plastic, a printed wood or stone layer, and a clear wear layer on top. The core is rigid and does not swell, which makes SPC well suited to the humidity of Goa.
The planks lock together along their edges and lie on the old floor as one sheet, without glue. This is called a floating floor.
| Core | Stone plastic composite: rigid and waterproof |
|---|---|
| Typical thickness | Commonly 4 to 6 mm, often with an underlay attached. It varies by make |
| Laid by | Click-lock planks, floating over the existing floor. No glue |
| Over old tiles | Yes, if the tiles are firm and level |
| Water and humidity | Unaffected. Suitable for every room, including kitchens |
| Feel | Firm and solid, quieter with an underlay |
| Price | Quoted after measuring. It depends on the thickness, wear layer and area |
The floor is checked for level, and any hollow or raised tiles are put right. An underlay goes down if the planks do not have one attached. Planks are then clicked together row by row, with the end joints staggered. A gap of a few millimetres is left at every wall and covered by the skirting, so the floor can expand in heat.
We do not publish a fixed rate for this, because the price depends on the design chosen, the area and the condition of the surface. We measure free of charge in Goa and quote before any work starts.
They look alike and are laid the same way. The difference is the core.
| SPC | Laminate | |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Stone and plastic | Wood fibre board |
| Water | Waterproof | Edges swell if water stands on the joints |
| Kitchens and ground floors | Yes | Not advised |
| Thickness | Thinner, so doors need less trimming | Thicker, commonly 8 or 12 mm |
| Feel | Firm | Slightly softer and warmer |
In a dry upper-floor bedroom either will do. Anywhere water or damp is likely, choose SPC.
