Wind governs everything on the Vagator plateau. The clifftop is among the windiest spots on the coast, and a curtain at an open terrace door will fly, snag and drag at its track unless it is planned for. Fix tracks into the slab or a solid lintel, weight the hems, and give every curtain a tie-back. Very light voiles are a poor choice; a sheer with some body hangs steadier. Red laterite dust blows in with the wind and shows on white and cream within days, so choose mid-tones in washable polyester blends. Villas and boutique hotels facing west also need a proper blackout in bedrooms, on aluminium track with nylon gliders against the salt.
Vagator sits on red laterite cliffs north of Anjuna, below the ruins of Chapora Fort. Its beaches lie at the foot of the cliffs, and the plateau above has hotels, clubs, restaurants with sea views and villas.
Buildings on the plateau are placed for the view: boutique hotels, restaurants and villas with terraces facing west. Terraces and outdoor seating are central to how they are used.
The clifftop is one of the windiest places on the coast. Salt spray, strong sun and red dust all reach it, and unguided outdoor fabric does not last.
Salt in the air stiffens fabric and rusts ordinary hooks and rings. Choose polyester or polyester-blend fabrics that can be machine washed, and aluminium or stainless tracks with nylon gliders. Keep curtains a hand's width clear of windows that are left open to the breeze, so spray does not wet the hem.
High ground catches wind from every side. Curtains on open windows billow and pull at their fixings, so tracks are screwed into the slab or a solid lintel, and weighted hems or tie-backs keep fabric from flying. Sheers with a little weight hang better than very light voiles.
